KCPR 91.3FM

KCPR 91.3FM is Cal Poly’s student-run radio station, which serves to bring new alternative and independent musical acts to listeners along California’s central coast.

My focus as the Art Director for the ‘23-’24 academic year was strengthening the station’s visual identity in order to increase brand recognition and reinforce its unique positioning. I was also responsible for the visual direction of our annual Pledge Drive, which took on the theme “Ignite the Sound” this year.

PLEDGE DRIVE ‘24 — IGNITE THE SOUND

“Is this the damn switch?” That phrase sparked the fire in August 1968 when KCPR hit the airwaves. For more than five decades KCPR has been on fire, serving Cal Poly and the greater San Luis Obispo area and fostering community and student development.

KCPR’s annual Pledge Drive took on the theme “Ignite the Sound” this year, drawing on the fiery passion that its members possess for the station and that has helped it come back from the uncertainty of COVID-19 stronger than ever. The theme represents KCPR’s trailblazing position within the college radio community, but also pays homage to Burnt Dog, the station’s beloved mascot.

I worked with KCPR’s fundraising and marketing directors to develop a visual identity for this year’s fundraising campaign, choosing a matchbox motif to realize the theme’s fiery elements and pairing that with electric colors to emphasize the station’s energy. In addition to designing the campaign’s promotional material (like giveaways and events) based on the identity, I also developed custom designs for specialty gifts that Pledge donors receive as gratitude for their support, such as matchboxes and a custom coffee blend.

This year’s campaign helped us surpass our fundraising goal, resulting in the largest amount of money ever raised for KCPR in its history.
