CalSCID
The California Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (CalSCID) Program is a patient-centered, long-term follow-up care program across seven California Newborn Screening Centers (UCSF, UCLA, UCD, UCSD, CHOC, CHLA, Stanford) for patients with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and T-cell lymphopenia.
In addition to designing a custom logo for the program, I worked with the CalSCID team to establish their visual identity. The goal was to develop a welcoming and knowledgable identity that would be used in both internal and external program operations.

PROCESS
Because CalSCID primarily works with medical patients and their families, I chose to use a bold, rounded sans serif for the logotype and a bright orange for the primary logo color to convey a sense of friendliness and trust. Along with the mark’s rounded nature, the ‘C’ and ‘D’ are connected to represent continuity and draws the viewer’s eye throughout the design.
To connect the mark back to the program, the logomark draws inspiration from T-cell receptor excision circles (TRECs).
